Piggy the Cat
For Piggy the cat, doughnuts were more than just an occasional treat . . . They were part of why he got up in the mornings.
Alas, his sweet tooth betrayed him in the end. Piggy ended up with adult-onset diabetes. His owner really didn't know the risks of giving cats sweets and fed Piggy this very unhealthy diet regularly and couldn't take care of Piggy's new medical problems.
Though Piggy was now living in the lap of luxury at Best Friends, there was one teensy little problem. He can't stand other cats! At all. Piggy moved into a quiet, laid-back cat room at Best Friends and then terrorized some of his mellow roommates, who scampered into the rafters. Youch.
When it became obvious that Piggy was not going to chill out, he made the switch to Best Friends office cat and has thrived ever since. No fuss, no complaints . . . not even when he's having blood drawn for glucose readings. Is this the same fellow? Yup. The biggest ruckus he makes now is to beg shamelessly for a morsel of people food from the staff. (And, boy, can he beg!)
Piggy's diabetes seems to make it difficult for him to get the most out of his now healthy diet. He had dandruff and a dry looking coat and seemed to feel lethargic much of the time. A serious bout with an acute liver problem put Piggy in the clinic for three weeks. During that time Piggy lost a lot of weight and had to have a feeding tube placed.
Good veterinary care, a diabetes management program, and Missing Link added to his healthy diet have helped Piggy to bounce back and Piggy has gotten much better. His coat looks shinier, his dandruff is gone, and his energy level is great! Even though Piggy will have diabetes for the rest of his life, you'd never know it by looking at him!
