Selenium Yeast

Found in:  Canine     Canine Plus     Equine     Equine Plus     Puppy

Selenium yeast is dried non-viable yeast, saccharonmyces cerevisiae, grown in a fermentation process which provides small amounts of selenium salts in a manner to minimize the detrimental effects of the selenium salts. The residual inorganic selenium must not exceed 2% of the total selenium content in the final selenium yeast product. The additive selenium yeast may be added to complete dog foods at not more than 0.333 ppm of selenium on a dry matter basis.

Selenium is an essential trace element in animal nutrition. In 1957, research determined that selenium administered to vitamin E deficient rats prevented liver necrosis. It was also found that it could prevent various disorders in farm animals. In animal models, selenium deficiency has resulted in depressed neutrophil activity, decreased Candidacidal activity by neutrophils and depressed cellular immunity. Animal studies suggest that selenium may have anti-angiogenic activity. A mechanism for this is its inhibitory effect on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factors.
