Safety tips for your pet during summer heat

Always remember to make water available: The water in your pet’s bowl can dry up fast, so it is up to you to fill it more frequently. Avoid leaving pets without water for even a short a period of time.
It’s a lot cooler in the shade: If your pets are outside, make sure they have access to shady areas. The difference in temperature between areas of shade and areas in the sun can be up to 15 degrees.
Even for a minute… never leave them in a car: This tip seems obvious, but sometimes you may think you’re only going to be gone for one or two minutes, and this can’t present any danger. We know that heat can rise to extremely high temperatures very quickly in an enclosed vehicle, so never take chances.
Watch for overheating during exercise: Sometimes your pet may wish to play or exercise so much that they don’t realize they are overheating. Be sure to limit your dog or cat’s time outside and let them in for water and rest when the weather is hot. Also, keep a fresh bowl of water available when you’re outside engaging in exercise or play with your pet.
Pool safety should be a priority: If there are pools or ponds around your home, keep in mind that these can present a safety hazard. Many dogs and cats can’t swim, and won’t be able to stay above water if they fall in. It’s a good idea to keep the pool fenced or monitor your pets while you’re near the water with them.
Keep your pet healthy with the right nutrition: In the heat of the summer your pet’s nutritional health must remain a priority. When you are traveling, remember to take along your pet’s Missing Link supplements. In the summer we must emphasize the importance of pet supplements. They serve to fill in the nutritional gap between what is provided in commercial pet food, and what your pet truly needs for optimal health.
